So tonight I went to church for our Men’s Bible Study which is followed by Compline.  The last two times I went to the Bible Study since they added Compline, the service was cancelled…

I was looking through the posts from Brothers of St. John the Steadfast and noticed that the church I attended in College was featured, Bethany LCMS in Naperville.  They are doing a series at BJS on authentic Lutheran worship…Click over and read the discussion!

I was perusing the world of YouTube and stumbled across Concordia Publishing House’s channel.  One of their videos was on confession:

I can remember when St. Paul’s reinstituted “scheduled” Private Confession.  Yeah, we never really got rid of private confession, it just stayed in the Pastor’s study for when we had a crisis and needed to chit chat with our spiritual father.

Do remember that the Lutheran Church is a catholic (i.e. universal) church.  So…what does this mean?  We’ll, we are the only church that uses scripture and scripture alone as the norm of our faith.  Other Christian denominations add various aspects – work, the pope, etc.

I saw a link to a blog about a thurible swinging at http://wdtprs.com/blog/2010/11/how-to-swing-a-thurible/ and then found this on YouTube.  I like the one on the blog better, but it can’t be linked here so go over there and watch it!  Pope Benedict appears to be in that one…

A big honking thurible

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to one of my churches seminaries, Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana for the first time ever.  It was to visit a few of our former vicars and a member who is going on vicarage.  I mention them now:

  • Pastor Elect Stuart N. Floyd,  Redeemer Lutheran Church in Warsaw, Indiana, vicar 2004-2005
  • Pastor Elect Peter A. Richert,  Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mt. Pocono, Pennslyvania, vicar 2005-2006
  • Vicar Elect Christopher R. Gillespie, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Saginaw, Michigan
  • Vicar Elect William Orr, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lockport, Illinois 2007-2008

When I was at the seminary I had found a wonderful book by Rev. Charles McClean called the Conduct of the Services. Unfortunately, I never was able to find the book in print. Well, until just recently. Seminarian Powell mentioned that the book was back in print – thanks to Father McClean and Redeemer Press. I ordered the book (the cover is just gorgeous in itself) and received it a couple of weeks back.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday (hard to believe it’s Lent already).  We have our Lenten Potlucks coming up and, naturally, catholic me strikes up a conversation with another elder on what we should bring to the Ash Wednesday supper.  I decided that I’d be giving up sweets – I have gained a few pounds since going into training because I just can’t say no to all that poor lonely candy sitting around begging for my sweet tooth.   So that means that I shouldn’t be bringing dessert, correct?  Which leaves a side-dish or meat (main dish?)…

I waited with great anticipation last Sunday for Pastor Juhl’s announcement on whether he is accepting the call to Our Savior in Momence. The announcement came, I was excited and said “I have to welcome him to the district” and promptly got busy with work and never welcomed Pastor Juhl.

So, here it is – Welcome to the Northern Illinois District.

I have been reviewing past posts on some blogs I bypassed during our recent (and busy) software conversion at work. Father Paine*, on his blog, Our Seneca, posted an interesting and thought provoking entry called No Soup for You.
